Cellist, conductor, composer and improviser Tomeka Reid is the second recipient of 18th Street Arts Center’s Make-Jazz Residency, funded by the Herb Alpert Foundation. The Residency fosters experimentation by giving exceptional emerging Jazz musicians time to develop new compositions while connecting them to Los Angeles practitioners and audiences. Reid will be premiering new work created during the Residency, and playing with her Jazz Trio - Devin Hoff on bass, Najite Agindotan on drums and Jared Mattson on guitar. Visit http://18thstreet.org/residency-program/international-artists-in-residence/tomeka-reid for more information.

Originally from the Washington, DC area, Tomeka Reid began her formal studies at the age of fourteen under the tutelage of Oliver Edel and went on to receive music degrees from the University of Maryland at College Park and DePaul University in Chicago. She has been featured with ensembles large and small including the Chicago Sinfonietta, Jazz Philharmonic, Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble as well as Nicole Mitchell’s Black Earth Ensemble, Mike Reed’s Loose Assembly, Dee Alexander’s Evolution Ensemble, the AACM’s Great Black Music Ensemble (GBME) and as co-leader of the collaborative trio Hear in Now. Reid has performed with such luminaries as Anthony Braxton, George Lewis, Roscoe Mitchell, Edward Wilkerson, Myra Melford, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Daniel Levin, Tomas Fujiwara, Mary Halvorson, Ingrid Laubrock, Mazz Swift, Silvia Bolognesi, Denis Fournier, and Didier Petit.

She is a recipient of a 2008 residency for composition from the Ragdale Foundation, and was commissioned in 2009 to compose for the GBME for the 31st Annual Chicago Jazz Festival. In 2011 the Chicago Jazz Ensemble commissioned her to compose a tribute to Melba Liston and Randy Weston for the 33rd Annual Chicago Jazz Festival. Currently she is a doctoral candidate in Jazz studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
