Program Description
This important, one-day seminar addresses the challenges of supporting breastfeeding mothers who come from cultures that are different from our own. Issues of respect, humility and safety will be discussed in the context of lessons learned from working with families of different cultures.
As breastfeeding supporters, it is essential that we not only have the knowledge to help a mother breastfeed, but that we also have the communication skills to impart that knowledge. In this workshop, participants will practice five steps that improve our lactation support interactions.
We will describe successful strategies from the Welcome Baby Program to increase exclusive breastfeeding in African American and Latino communities.
Touch is the foundation for attachment and bonding. We will identify behaviors that participants can adopt to facilitate and support maternal-infant attachment.
Objectives
At the conclusion of the didactic presentations and workshop activities, the participants will be able to:
1. List two cultural beliefs that may interfere with the effective interaction between the breastfeeding supporter and a mother or her family;
2. Describe the five steps to assure optimal communication, understanding, education and breastfeeding outcomes; and to
3. Identify the role of attachment in achieving self-regulation.
