Please note: THIS TRAINING IS OPEN TO SWEETWATER UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT TEACHERS ONLY.
RNAi is an excellent way to examine the process of the central dogma. In this lab, we will look at the microscopic nematode, C. elegans. These worms eat bacteria and we will feed them bacteria that have been transformed with an RNAi molecule. This molecule degrades the production of collagen in the worms. Over three days time, this degradation of collagen will cause the worm to lose its shape and become short and fat. This phenotype is called "dumpy". This lab allows the students to make a visual connection between RNA, protein and phenotype.
BioBridge Curricula interfaces world-class scientists, leading technology companies, high school students and science educators to develop innovative laboratory activities based on current research. Opportunities include supporting BioBridge staff at training sessions, supporting teachers in the classroom. Experienced Science Leaders can also offer one-on-one lab consultations and reviews.
