A panel discussion featuring Hirshhorn Museum Chief Curator and Deputy Cirector Kerry Brougher, Tokyo Mori Art Museum Chief Curator Mami Kataoka, Hirshhorn Museum curator Mika Yoshitake and contemporary art curator at The Freer and Sackler Galleries Carol Huh. This event will be moderated by Georgetown University Asian Art Professor Michelle Wang and is held in light of the anticipated “Ai WeiWei: According to What?” retrospective opening at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden three days after.

Ai WeiWei is China’s most famous and controversial artist who has received immense international attention due to his role in Chinese contemporary art. Ai’s open criticism of the Chinese government via his artwork and social media has placed him in an unfavorable situation with the communist party. His artistic role has transformed from one of the three chosen designers of the 2008 Beijing Olympic’s Bird’s Nest stadium, a captive of Chinese officials for two months to an ‘economic criminal’ unable to travel overseas.
