Our next event topic is Healthy Materials with a focus on Flame Retardants and its role in our built environment. The discussions and debate surrounding Flame retardants and its impacts on Human Health are taking center stage. Starting from the series called Playing with Fire published by Chicago tribune to CA state revising its TB117-Flammability Standards for Furniture and Furnishings eliminating Flame Retardants to the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee voting to pass the Safe Chemicals Act which will reform the 35-year-old Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) – the topic of requiring transparency in our building products and materials and avoiding chemicals of concern has become mainstream issue more than ever before. Our experienced speakers will get into the details of both understanding both the science and policies behind the current issue of Flame retardants and the concerns and also the tools that are available to help promote transparency and disclosure so that the decisions we make are based on reliable and accurate information.

Our first speaker, Renee Hackenmiller Paradis, MPH, PhD, will explore the topic - Are Flame Retardants Safe? Health, Material and Policy Considerations. She is the co-founder and principal at SHARP Strategies Consultants, LLC where she helps clients navigate policy, politics, and people. 

We will end the session with a guest speaker from the International Living Future Institute (ILFI) who will provide us an overview of the Declare program and describe how tools such as Declare and Health Product Declaration (HPD) will help with some of the critical challenges and issues surrounding the materials decision making process.
