This year's Winter Adventure begins at 10:15 am at Fort Clark State Historic Site. Snowshoe across the archaeological site while discussing winter 200 years ago. Learn how the Missouri River has changed and look at some historic maps.

Enjoy a shared meal with fellow adventurers at the Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site Visitor Center and spend the afternoon snowshoeing through the Hidatsa villages. Share a snack and learn about Hidatsa village life and the Knife and Missouri Rivers through the lenses of archaeology, geology, history and oral tradition. Back at the visitor center, warm up with hot chocolate as you learn to use flint and steel to start a fire, check out your buffalo hunting skills using atlatls to throw spears or compete with fellow adventurers using ice gliders. Then gather around a roaring fire in the earthlodge, for a traditional feast. This unforgettable evening continues with traditional stories and American Indian flute music.

Sponsored by the Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site, the Knife River Indian Heritage Foundation, the State Historical Society of North Dakota, and the North Dakota Geological Survey, the Registration is $65 per person. The fee includes two hearty meals, use of snowshoes, all activity supplies, and presentations. This outdoor program requires moderate physical activity and is recommended for ages 12 years and older. Participants are responsible for their own warm clothing. A memorable and safe experience for all participants is our goal. Warm drinks and indoor alternatives will be available throughout the day.
