Description:

Personal growth is one of the primary goals for many support and educational group activities. To grow and change people must be able to recognize the value of viewing life in a different way and be given opportunities to explore new possibilities for coping with life. Group activities can provide a framework for experiencing new perspectives. However, many support, therapeutic, psycho-educational, self-help and learning groups rely mainly on verbal approaches to learning and teaching. But most people learn through a variety of methods including, sensory awareness, thinking, doing, watching, listening and feeling. Therefore, therapeutic value and the possibility for insight and expression are increased when group members explore issues from a variety of modes. This workshop will cover techniques for implementing a variety of learning modalities during group activities. Participants will be introduced to movement, music, drawing, poetry, creative drama and game type activities that incorporate many learning modalities and various forms of expression. Facilitation skills will be described that cover various techniques for introducing and managing activities in various learning modes. Using samples from a large list of group activities, participants will have opportunities to facilitate activities that incorporate learning and expression through diverse modes.

After attending this workshop participants will be able to:

  • Describe the therapeutic value of multi-modal activities
  • List four modes of learning and expressing
  • Develop divergent learning activities that incorporate group topics
  • Facilitate multi-modal learning activities
  • Explain the connection between activities and life skill to group members
