Film screening and discussion of Dark Money and Suppressing the Vote

Are you concerned about the power of big money in the 2012 election? Did you think that Democrats had fought and won the battles against voter suppression?

Come to the screening of Bill Moyer's Dark Money and Suppressing the Vote to find out more about these two key issues in the 2012 campaign and to learn how the Democratic Party is addressing them.

Dark Money
After the Supreme Court's Citizens United ruling in January 2010 paved the way for unlimited corporate and union spending on federal elections, many feared the influence of the super PACs. In interviews with author Thomas Frank and Mother Jones activists and researchers, Moyers puts the spotlight on the role of "dark money" in general and the super PACs in particular. In the discussion after the screening, we will also address the role of "non-profit c4s", which are bigger spenders than the super PACs, pouring almost $60 million into TV ads to influence the Presidential race so far, more than  all super PACs put together. Unlike super PACs, these c4s don't have to disclose their donors.

Suppressing the Vote
Suppressing the Vote
addresses another central issue: the proliferation of GOP-sponsored Voter ID laws. Ostensibly designed to address a problem of voter fraud (for which there is no evidence), these laws are clearly intended to have the effect of denying the vote to swathes of Democratic supporters including poor people, African-Americans, Hispanics, young people and urbanites. These efforts to disenfranchise American voters – on a scale not seen since the era of the poll tax, grandfather clauses and literacy tests – are being challenged in the courts.
