GONJASUFI with Sonnymoon & B. Lewis @ ND ... Austin, TX 10.04
Thursday, October 4, 2012 at 9:00 PM - Friday, October 5, 2012 at 2:00 AM (CDT)
APPLIED PRESSURE / EXPLODED DRAWING / DUB ACADEMY
These are times of radical change, and musicians and artists have long been at the forefront of crystallizing states of unrest and utopian ideas. Enter Gonjasufi: a man at the center of a new vanguard of strange and experimental sound holding ranks with Flying Lotus, and The Gaslamp Killer. His music has echoed louder and louder in the minds of true fans since the 90s right up until the minute A Sufi and a Killer (with Gaslamp Killer) dropped in 2010 on Warp Records, cementing his status as a voice to be heard, a creator of haunting and beautiful psychadelia that, in retrospect, music seemed quite ready for. To hear the man himself say it: "It's time to wake up the youth. They need another option, they're searching for it. We're right here."
Following A Sufi and a Killer, Gonjasufi released MU.ZZ.LE earlier this year, a hot and humid 24 minute EP of ruminations he's been sitting on since 2003 and characterized as being “from the core. It’s the sound of the ancients”. It's this juxtaposition of ideas and unabashed musical experimentation that has fans anxiously awaiting each release, and lining up to catch the man perform. Physically occupying some space between George Clinton and Moses, his presence of personality is often what leaves both audiences, and listeners awed by this seemingly timeless, and yet absolutely contemporary approach to sounds.
As part of his 'Across Amerika' tour Gonjasufi will be backed by Skrapez, comprised of David Lampley (Psychopop) and Jonathan Calzo (Tenshun) who bring strange, abrasive snuff films aesthetics to beat-making utilizing often-unfiltered drums with low churning basslines culling images of horror scenes and empty basements from here to San Diego, where they come from.
Joining them are Sonnymoon, a Boston-based duo led by Anna Wise & Dane Orr. In their words, they are "an army of the audible, a musical militia manned by two," this time joined with kindred musicians to amplify their message as a band. Sonnymoon have made quite a statement of their earthly mission through their debut album "Golden Age" and their follow up EP "2012" which bubbles and flows with the feeling of space aged spirituals yet to come. Look not towards the future, friends, because the time is Now.
Additional support will be provided by soulful San Francisco beatmaker B. Lewis.
