Antoinette has worked in Hospitals in the New York area in inpatient psychiatric units and in child abuse prevention programs for battered women. At Planned Parenthood of New York City she developed a psycho-educational program for families at high risk of domestic violence and child abuse. As a Clinical Assessment Coordinator she conducted assessments for a Baker Act Receiving Facility and was a member/trainer on a crisis intervention team. She has also been a Domestic Violence Specialist providing emergency clinical services to families experiencing mental health, substance abuse or domestic violence emergencies and in that role she worked closely with Child Protection Investigators and the State Attorney's Office.

Description:

Each week in the United States, an average of 20 workers are murdered and 18,000 are assaulted while at work. (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) Homicide has become the second leading cause of occupational injury and death. Organizations that deal with the public carry significant risk of violence. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health estimates that most assaults occur in hospitals and social service agencies. Non fatal assaults represent a considerable cost to organizations in lost work time and wages. This presentation will focus on risk reduction strategies that address the needs of agencies in which public interaction is integral to everyday functioning. In order to prevent violent incidents, it is essential that programs act proactively in determining protocols and providing workers with training and support in conflict management and de-escalation of agitated individuals.
