Moms, Babies, Milk and the Law: Legal and Ethical Issues for Lactation Consultants
Friday, December 7, 2012
9:00 am to 4:00 pm
Faculty:
Elizabeth Brooks, JD, IBCLC, FILCA
Lawyer/Lactation Consultant
Pennsylvania
Program Description
Liz Brooks is a lactation consultant and a lawyer. She has worked as a criminal prosecutor, Congressional lobbyist and a federal litigator as well as an IBCLC in private practice, in hospitals and at a non-profit, community-based breastfeeding clinic. She brings her wealth of knowledge and experience to us for this important one-day seminar to help us determine what could, should or must be done when ethical red flags are raised.
We will discuss the highlights of legal and ethical issues for the IBCLC including certification vs. licensure, Internet issues, potential conflicts of interest, intellectual property law, the WHO Code and the IBCLC as an advocate for breastfeeding and breastfeeding mothers.
We will learn from funny, poignant and thought-provoking case studies and gain insight into how hospital-based practices and teaching styles impact mothers and babies long after discharge.
Finally, professional standards encourage all IBCLCs to use a policy and procedure manual to outline your business practices. The legal and ethical requirements of the P & P Manual will be explained and participants will leave with a comprehensive outline, a strategic plan and renewed motivation.
Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
- Identify both mandatory and voluntary practice-guiding documents for IBCLCs.
- Describe key phrases to use in discharge teaching to assist a mother once she is home
- Implement record-keeping changes to enhance private practice
