Interview with Burmese comedian Zarganar by writer and journalist Minka Nijhuis

Maung Thura is a Burmese comedian and social activist. He began performing comedy as Zarganar in 1986, repopularising the Burmese tradition of anyeint, a performance form similar to vaudeville. His routines are characterised by sharp social and political observations presented through puns and double entendres.

For his satirical political criticism Zarganar was repeatedly arrested and imprisoned for a total of 11 years. Since his release in 2011, Zarganar has campaigned to pressure the Burmese government to fulfill its pro-democracy proposals.

In addition to his comedy routines, Zarganar produced, directed and acted in roughly 40 films and videos, mentored young performers, and organised emergency relief for communities devastated by Cyclone Nargis in 2007.
