Participants will take a more focused look at community problem solving with intermediary knowledge, habits, and skills. The workshop will provide opportunities for in depth discussion and practice, and will prepare participants to work more effectively as community problem solvers.
Speaker: Brook Son
Brook has been with the TCHHS & VS Research & Planning Division since January of 2004. Her primary focus is building local community-capacity to solve system-level problems through cooperative, inclusive processes. She teaches a graduate-level community-building class for the University of Texas School of Social Work in the Fall.
In eight years of direct social service, Brook worked with populations in the following issue areas: childhood abuse and neglect, drug addiction and alcoholism, teen parenting, adult literacy and ESL, early education, and family poverty.
Brook has particular expertise in early education. From 1999 to 2001 Brook was Center Director at Mainspring School, an accredited preschool licensed for up to 60 children. Brook currently offers planning support to the City of Austin’s Early Education and Care effort, and has served on the Work Force Solution Child Care Advisory Board. Brook is the current Board of Directors chair person for Austin Discovery School charter elementary.
Brook holds an MSSW with a focus on Administration and Planning from the University of Texas at Austin.
