Rules Revolution

The Business Analyst role in decision management services

Decision Models is a technique used to separate the logic needed by a solution to make and support decisions or selections from the presentation details and workflow logic.  Ultimately, the goal is to have the decision information become data to the program.  It accomplishes this using a format that is easier for the customers to understand, enabling them to maintain this information.

This presentation explains what the “Rules Revolution” is and how it can make software development more agile. It also outlines what the role of the BA is in this growing field and offers a brief tutorial on how to construct decision management models, along with a few lessons learned at CDPHP.

Learning Objectives:
  • Know the Decision Modeling and Rule Families
  • Understand the Elements of the Decision Model
  • Know the distinction between Rules and Requirements
  • Impact that Decision Management Services can have on an organization and the BA role
  • Realize some of the practical challenges that an organization can face

Speaker:

Tony DeFarlo is the Director of Business Rules and Process Innovation Services at Capital District Physicians Health Plan (CDPHP).  As such, he is responsible for Business Analysis, Process Improvement, Decision Management Services.  He is also a ScrumMaster of an agile development team using rules and SoA, and is responsible for implementation of IBM Rational tools to support change management and software delivery.

Tony has also been a Wall Street Proprietary Trader for Hedge Funds and a US Marine Corps Special Intelligence Operator (Cryptology)
