Chincoteague and Assateague Islands are located on the Eastern Shore and offer miles clean undeveloped beaches, marshes and forests stretching from Virginia to Maryland. The area is known for its great abundance of migratory birds and wild horses. We will be photographing the various waterfowl, such as the great blue heron, osprey, great egret, cattle egret, snowy egret, double-crested cormorant, glossy ibis, tundra swan, American black duck and man others.
The number of shorebirds using the Chincoteague Wildlife Refuge ranks it fourth among sites east of the Rockies at which a census has been taken. It is second in diversity. The beach, flats, marshes, and impoundments have established the refuge as one of the most important shorebird management areas in eastern North America.
Birds and wild ponies are not the only photographic opportunities on the islands. The Town of Chincoteague is a quaint little village with Victorian Inns with great architectural detail and there is a lighthouse on Assateague, the golden marshes and blue waters are beautiful at sunrise and sunset, the reflections at sunset are just amazing, there are shipping vessels, boat houses, etc., that provide many opportunities for some interesting abstracts. Let your eye be your guide to some of the colorful surroundings you may encounter.
When we are driving around the loop, you will probably see the Sika deer, which are a Japanese species. These are smaller than the white-tailed deer usually seen in our area.
There are several restaurants in the area but reservations are certainly recommended. We have been to a few which we will recommend.
In the evenings we will meet and review some of our photos from the day. We will have a digital projector and laptops, so if you want to download some of your images for review, it will be a great time to share and see what great images you captured during the day. This is a great way to get ideas for better composition, exposure, etc. A short refresher class on Photoshop to include cropping, cloning, sharpening, burning and dodging techniques will also be included in this workshop.
A great photography opportunity to increase your portfolio.
