August 25 Fruit Tree Stewardship Day at the Ranch
Saturday, August 25, 2012 from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM
Rancho Cordova, CA
Join us on Saturdays this summer, 9:30am - noon, to become part of a group of trained fruit tree stewards that can help with a fruit tree maintenance and planting project through Harvest Sacramento in select Sacramento neighborhoods this coming winter.
Soil Born Farms' Harvest Sacramento has harvested and donated almost 50,000 pounds of fruit from backyard trees already in 2012 alone! While this is a drop in the bucket of the fruit that is currently being produced by our backyard trees, we want to ensure that our trees continue this production for future generations. In order for this to happen we will need a community of skilled and experienced "tree stewards" to help maintain our existing trees and plant new trees.
Thanks to a grant from Sacramento Tree Foundation we planted nearly 450 trees into diversified 4-acre orchard at our American River Ranch with the intention that it would serve as a training ground for tree stewards as well as a food production asset for the farm. We are looking for volunteers that would like to learn more about fruit trees and orcharding and can help us tend this newly planted orchard. Ideally, volunteers would help on an on-going basis through the summer and fall (at least once a month).
If you have questions about this or would like more information, please contact Randy Stannard (email@example.com) or Simon Farmer (firstname.lastname@example.org).
All volunteers must complete a Volunteer Waiver to participate. Bring closed-toe shoes, a hat, a water bottle, and clothes you don't mind getting dirty.
A note about children and youth on the farm: Any child under the age of 15 mush be accompanied by and supervised by a parent or guardian while on farm properties. Any child between the ages of 15 and 18 will need a parent or guardian signature to volunteer but can do so without parent or guardian supervision.
