Evening Reception welcoming the newly appointed Vice President of the MAHCC Arlington/Alexandria Chapter, Mr. Ed Velarde (Vice President, SunTrust Bank-Arlington), and the new Arlington County Public Schools Superintendent, Dr. Patrick K. Murphy.


When: Thursday, September 17, 2009.

Admission:  $15.  RSVP required. There will also be a special fundraiser for the 2009 Latino Education Summit of Arlington, VA.

About Dr. Patrick K. Murphy: Dr. Murphy is the newly appointed Arlington Public Schools (APS) Superintendent. Prior to coming to APS, Dr. Murphy was the Assistant Superintendent-Department of Accountability, Fairfax County Public Schools. He has held numerous teaching and administrative positions in his 21-year career in several public schools districts of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Dr. Murphy earned an educational administration degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

About Mr. Ed Velarde: Mr. Velarde is the newly appointed Vice President in charge of the MAHCC Arlington/Alexandria Chapter. His career in the banking and investments sector spans 17 years. He began his career at the former Crestar Securities Corporation (a predecessor to SunTrust Bank) where he played a key role in the development and launch of a successful brokerage platform for over 25 branch offices throughout the DC-Marketplace.  He then moved to a major global bank in New York City. He is currently a Vice President in charge of business development at SunTrust Bank in Arlington, VA..

About the Coordinating Committee for the 2009 Latino Education Summit: The Coordinating Committee for the 2009 Latino Education Summit is chaired by Gabriela Uro and includes representatives from Escuela Bolivia, MANA, LULAC, Mid-Atlantic Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Latino Parent Groups, PTA, and Latino Student Associations.  It will be held on Thursday, October 22, 2009, 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m, Washington Lee High School, 1302 N. Stafford Street, Arlington, VA 22201. Key Partners for the summit are the Honorable Emma Violand-Sanchez, the Honorable Walter Tejada, and School Superintendent Patrick K. Murphy.t.
