Lean Design Forum

Berkeley , CA

The Lean Design Forum of LCI was formed to:

  • Develop evidence for the benefits of investing in design; benefits for customers, designers and all stakeholders, including society.
  • Develop means for executing design to increase return on investment.
  • Promote beneficial practices in the construction industry. LCI's role in the Design Forum is to: · Collect and analyze data from experiments. · Serve as benchmarking center.
  • Promote changes in industry practice.

The investigation will focus on that part of a project between the big phases of a construction project: Plan-Design-Build. The handoffs between these phases limit Design to whatever takes place in and between schematic design and the production of fabrication and installation instructions. The Forum will also include in its scope the Project Definition part of Planning--where project feasibility is assessed and objectives are set.

Lean Construction Institute LCI/The Project Production Systems Laboratory (P2SL)

The Lean Construction Institute (LCI), a non-profit research organization, was founded in August 1997. LCI's purpose is to develop and disseminate new knowledge regarding the management of work in design, engineering and construction for capital facilities. LCI has developed the Lean Project Delivery System© (LPDS), and the Last Planner® System of production control. Lean Construction is a production management-based approach to project delivery - a new way to design and build capital facilities. Lean production management has caused a revolution in manufacturing design, supply and assembly. Applied to construction, Lean changes the way work is done throughout the delivery process. Lean Construction extends from the objectives of a lean production system - maximize value and minimize waste - to specific techniques and applies them in a new project delivery process extending from project definition through design, supply and assembly.

The Project Production Systems Laboratory  (P2SL), University of California, Berkeley is dedicated to developing and deploying knowledge and tools for the management ofproject production systems and the management of organizations that produce and deliver goods and services through such systems.  Project production systems include construction, product development, software engineering, air, and sea ship building, work order systems, job shops, performing arts productions, oil field development, and health care delivery.
