Adobe® Photoshop Basics

With the steady growth in the digital photography industry, the need for Photoshop knowledge is more in demand than ever.  This seminar is designed to get you up and running with all of the basic tools that you need to be productive in this popular image editing software.

Although this seminar is geared towards the beginner, we will cover some topics that are useful to many users who are already involved in casual use of Photoshop.  I will provide you with instruction on all of the basic tools and their use with a variety of examples.  You will be provided with images that we will edit during the workshop so you9ll have the opportunity to use these tools as you learn them.  After the initial instruction segment of the workshop we9ll spend the balance of the day addressing the needs of you the students.  This will give us the opportunity to better understand the variety of ways that Photoshop is being used in the industry.

Here9s some of the tools and topics we9ll be covering;

Cropping
Marquee tools
Lasso tools
Rubber Stamp/Cloning tool
Eraser
Smudge/Sharpen/Blur
Paint Bucket
Hand tool
Move tool
Magic wand
Paint brush
Line/Pencil tool
Dodge/Burn/Sponge tool
Text tool
Gradient tools
Eye dropper

Layers
Selections and modifying selections
Adjusting color levels
Merging images into a composition
Resizing images for multiple applications
Using filters to handle issues like dust and scratches
Blurring the background of an image to highlight your subject
Using guides to control edits
Replacing colors
Converting images to other formats

Example of modifying an image and cropping to make a composite
This is just an example of the topics we9ll discuss. Our objective is to make sure you leave with a grasp of the tools in Photoshop that are most important to you.  Meanwhile, we9ll seek to expose you to tools that will become important to you as your experience in Photoshop continues.

You will have to bring your own computer to this workshop and you9ll need to have Photoshop installed and running.  Doors will open 1 hour prior to the seminar start time for computer setup.  Please be ready to start at the published start time.

I will be teaching this workshop with Photoshop Version 7.  The tools that I9m teaching exist in almost all versions of Photoshop including Elements.  However, the location and function of the tools in Elements will vary dramatically from the full version of Photoshop.  You will still benefit from the workshop if you are using Elements, but you MUST have a good deal of familiarity with Elements prior to this workshop.

This seminar will run all day with a lunch break starting around 1:00 P.M..

Student Reviews:

I have taken every class from Jeff and been on a few excursions and have gone from taking hundreds of snapshots hoping for a few keepers, to taking a handful of photographs and most will be keepers. You will not find many people with as much experience in film development, digital, Photoshop, printing, scanning, business, teaching, studio, modeling, product photography, macro, and a tour guide through Kansas. Jeff can even make a drive through western Kansas a wonderful experience and you will come back with stories to pass on.  Mike B.

I have attended Jeff's photography class as well as a couple of workshops. I was a complete novice with my little point and shoot camera. Jeff insisted the camera didn't matter, it was all about trusting yourself to take it off "auto" and learn to really take pictures. The material was presented in a format easy for me to understand with lots of one on one instruction (and with a sense of humor!) He convinced me I was smarter than my camera, and the proof is in the photos. When people look at my photos and tell me I missed my calling and should have been a photographer... well that's a testimony to Jeff!  Lori K.
