6:30 -8:00pm Concert
If you were here for his 2009 concert at the Beach you may recall this artist, who pairs lyrical virtuosity with a down-home style and a whimsical approach to improvisation. This time he'll be playing a mixture of classical (Bartok, Fauré, de Falla), jazz (Django Reinhardt) and Gypsy music, accompanied by the Transylvanian Mountain Boys (guitarist Christopher Judge and double-bass player Brendan Statom). Apap and the Boys play an eclectic evening of classical, jazz, and folk music, and regale audiences with tales alternately hilarious and moving.
"Equally at home with Bartok and bluegrass, Mozart and the music of the Bulgarian ghettos,
Gilles Apap is a violinist who defies categorisation." - Josef Woodard, The Strad
Gilles Apap is known for his extraordinary ability to integrate a variety of musical genres, incorporating styles of music as diverse as American bluegrass and Gypsy fiddling with the standards of the classical repertoire. As a soloist, Apap has appeared with orchestras across the globe, and has led master classes at such diverse educational institutions as conservatories in Malmo, Lisbon, and Geneva, the University of Indiana, and Mark O’Connor’s Fiddle Camp. He also tours regularly with his ensembles Colors of Invention and the Transylvanian Mountain Boys. gillesapap.com.
