YOUSRC training for teachers

No programming experience is needed prior to this course.

Background

YOUSRC has been used by more than 6,000 students in the past year as students take their first steps in writing real code. Some of these students have been using it to do controlled assessments for the OCR GCSE Computing qualification. The typical age of students using YOUSRC is 13 to 16, though some older and younger students use it as well.

Web, Android, and Raspberry Pi

YOUSRC apps run in a web browser and - unchanged - on Android mobile devices. We are also porting the YOUSRC environment to the Raspberry Pi allowing apps which interface to electronics like LEDs and switches. We will show YOUSRC apps running on both Android and Raspberry Pi devices at this event.

Aims of the training

This training day aims to equip you to use YOUSRC in your school by taking you through the free lesson plans available on the site so you can hear how the creator of this resource would teach these lessons. Then, some advanced topics such as how to access files and process text data will also be covered to prepare you for the sort of functionality needed in GCSE controlled assessments.

If these advanced topics don't suit you then you can continue to work through some programming exercises instead in this supportive learning environment.

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) or borrow one from us?

This is a hands-on training day. You may bring your own laptop, or contact us to ask us to provide one for you. If you want to use your own laptop then please make sure you can login and run some of the Showcase apps on the YOUSRC website before you come to the training. This will validate that you have Java properly installed. Please make sure any laptop loan requests are with us 7 days before the event.

YOUSRC+ subscribers

If your school is a YOUSRC+ subscriber then you are entitled to 25% discount on the training. Please could you book as usual and I will give you a cheque refund for the discount at the training event.
