Event Description:

Four local community agencies purchase a new building. They receive a patient capital loan, allowing them to co-locate, and renovate a downtown building instead of renting – the mortgage payments cover an asset (the building) rather than an expense (rent).

A workers’ co-op with a social enterprise sought a $250,000 loan and share issue for its expansion. This enabled its revenues to triple from $500,000 to $1.7 million, thus, increasing its global and local impact and doubling its co-op membership.

These are each examples of social finance in action.

As a program manager for the MaRS Centre for Impact Investing, Joanna leads the education and engagement initiatives. Joanna has spent the past three years working on social finance development with Social Innovation Generation National, a national collaboration working to catalyze the social finance marketplace in Canada. She has worked in the community sector in Toronto for over 10 years and is a graduate of Queen’s University with a Masters of Education from the University of Toronto. She is currently a board member of TREC Renewable Energy Co-operative and continues studies on sustainable investing at the John Molson School of Business at Concordia University.
