The institute also delves into Mastering the Essentials, a genre study to start the year off. In this unit, teachers learn the expectations, organization and structure of writing workshop as well as the technology practices and procedures that will make the program successful for students and for themselves. The final segment of the multi-day institute covers performance assessment practices by introducing rubrics and other tools and strategies appropriate for measuring progress, conferring and differentiating instruction. Integral to this professional development process is practice in using 21st century tools and assessment strategies that can be applied back at school.

When & Where
Teaching Matters is excited to host three events for NYC students to showcase their Common Core work in fun and exciting ways! We have made our Voices and Choices civics curricula for 7th grade and 8th grade available free of charge. In addition, we are offering all schools free access to the Writing Poetry unit, one of seven comprehensive Common Core-aligned units within our Writing Matters curriculum -- proven to increase ELA scores!
