Event Details

20 years after the first Rio Earth Summit that resulted in conventions on biodiversity, desertification and climate change, what progress has been made in moving the sustainability agenda forward? What still needs to be done to tackle the major challenges the planet faces, from severe weather events, water scarcity and food shortages, to global pandemics and endemic poverty?

On July 11th, John Elkington will explore the trajectory of the sustainability agenda in conversation with Geoff Kendall of SustainAbility– answering questions on how sustainability has gathered momentum, where we are now, what is meant by ‘Breaking the Sustainability Barrier’ and what the current opportunities and challenges are for different players.

Drawing from his new book, The Zeronauts, John will share case studies on the most innovative businesses and entrepreneurs that are driving transformative change. John will also share his latest ideas – what he calls the “Zero agenda” – around the need to stretch targets aggressively; supported most recently by Ban Ki Moon’s recent editorial, The Future We Want, calling for zero hunger, zero stunting of children and zero food waste.

Finally, John will answer questions on his own career – how he made it to where he is, the challenges he has faced, and what he sees as the opportunities and challenges that face the next generation of sustainability professionals.
