The Los Angeles chapter of the Institute for International Film Financing (IIFF) continues its acclaimed series of monthly gatherings at the junction of film & finance with another special Film Financing Townhall in Hollywood. Our friends at The Los Angeles Film School are again hosting us at their state-of-the-art facilities in the heart of the city, conveniently located near the corner of Sunset & Vine.
This "grassroots" community get-together is designed to foster & inform productive relationships between attending professionals and to provide unbiased insight & education about the business of film (and film financing in particular). The event features a powerful roster of highly topical speakers from the filmmaking and financial industries. We are delighted to welcome real-world financiers among our guests for the evening!
IIFF's one-of-a-kind mission is to sustainably expand the scope & appeal of film financing, and to do so for the benefit of the public at large. The evening's five seven presentations plus panel discussion will address key issues relevant to filmmakers, financiers, and anyone interested in the economics, business mechanics, and financial dynamics of film. They will be followed by Q&A time. Attendees will also have ample opportunity to interact & network with our distinguished presenters and panelists and amongst themselves.
An informal après-meeting celebration will take place at an area restaurant.

– Ronald J. "Ron" Bass (topic): Ron is an Oscar-winning screenwriter and a successful film producer, whose work is highly in demand. Often called the "King of the Pitches", he is widely regarded as one of Hollywood's most prolific and highest paid writers. Films Ron is associated with are regularly nominated for multiple prestigious awards. He is perhaps best known for his 1988 masterpiece "Rain Man" (Dustin Hoffman, Tom Cruise), which won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. "Rain Man" tells the heartwarming story of an erstwhile con artist learning to cope with his severely autistic brother. Ron also wrote or co-wrote the screenplays for "Sleeping with the Enemy", "When a Man Loves a Woman", "Dangerous Minds", "Waiting to Exhale", "My Best Friend's Wedding", "How Stella Got Her Groove Back", "What Dreams May Come", "Stepmom", "Entrapment" and "Snow Falling on Cedars". Moreover, his co-writing credits include collaborations with five-time Emmy Award-winning actor/writer Al Franken on "When a Man Loves a Woman" (Andy Garcia, Meg Ryan, Ellen Burstyn) and acclaimed author Amy Tan on the timeless masterpiece "The Joy Luck Club" (directed by Wayne Wang). Ron began his career in the entertainment industry as an attorney, after graduating from Harvard Law School. During his time in the legal profession, he would use the early morning hours before work to hone his craft as a screenwriter. »
– Jill Gwen (topic): Jill is Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Senior Vice President of Finance and Operations at Fox Searchlight Pictures, a film division of 20th Century Fox that specializes in indie and British films, alongside "dramedy" and horror movies, and is variously involved with their production and/or distribution. Jill has been with Searchlight since its inception in 1994, and currently oversees all financial and operational aspects, including production, story development, acquisition, term deals, marketing, distribution, exhibitor relations, film festivals, academy, and organizational restructuring. She has worked on numerous films such as the Academy Award-winning Best Picture "Slumdog Millionaire", "The Wrestler", "The Secret Life of Bees", "Juno", "Little Miss Sunshine", "Thank You for Smoking", "The Last King of Scotland", "Sideways", "Bend It Like Beckham", "Napoleon Dynamite", "Boys Don't Cry" and "The Full Monty". Jill was previously with 20th Century Fox's International Theatrical Distribution division. There, she was key in establishing regional offices, creating joint ventures throughout Latin America and Asia Pacific, and implementing the Pan Regional banking structure in Europe with Theatrical, Home Video and TV. Jill began her entertainment career at the Walt Disney Studios, where she did international financial planning. She was the key note speaker at the Global Film Financing Conference at the Cannes Film Festival in 2003, and the key note speaker at the LA Film School Graduation Ceremonies in 2008 and 2007. In February '09, Jill spoke in Mumbai on the Globalization of Indian Cinema at FRAMES, Asia's largest entertainment industry convention. She has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Southern California in Finance and Business Economics, and she earned her MBA in Marketing Management from Loyola Marymount University while working full time at the Walt Disney Company. Jill also holds a Master's degree in Consciousness Studies from the Ernest Holmes Institute in Los Angeles. »
– Schuyler M. Moore, Esq. (topic): Schuyler is a Partner in the Corporate Entertainment Department at the Los Angeles office of national law firm Stroock & Stroock & Lavan, LLP. He concentrates in entertainment, tax and corporate law. Among Schuyler's clients are producers, sales agents, foreign distributors and financiers. Practicing law for over 25 years, he has authored several books including "The Biz: The Basic Business, Legal and Financial Aspects of the Film Industry" (Selman-James Press) and "Taxation of the Entertainment Industry" (CACHE). Variety magazine says that he is "Long known as a tax lawyer who literally wrote the book about the business". Schuyler has also written over 40 articles for legal journals throughout his career. Among his many recent matters, he has represented: Summit Entertainment on a transaction that converted it from foreign sales agent into a domestic distributor with over $500 million of financing; a joint investor with Fox in the M. Night Shyamalan film "The Happening"; bridge and gap financier Aramid Entertainment on several slate and single-picture loans; Grosvenor Park on a number of single-picture film financings; the producers of "Goal!", a $100 million trilogy of soccer films financed by a novel approach of equity investment from advertisers (in this case, Adidas); a video company on a $65 million loan from an investment bank that is structured as a "true sale" to a bankruptcy remote special purpose vehicle; the largest film sales agent in connection with an equity investment from a large private equity fund for the purpose of acquiring and distributing film rights in Latin America; an independent film production company in connection with a $100 million production line of credit (with equity elements) from a large equity fund; ClickStar, a partnership between chip-making giant Intel and Morgan Freeman, which distributes films via VOD on the Internet, from inception through launch; Prentice Capital in its acquisition of video distributor First Look, DEJ (from Blockbuster) and Ventura Distribution, and a subsequent $75 million line of credit from Merrill Lynch; and a large private equity fund in connection with its purchase of several video companies. Schuyler is also an Adjunct Professor at both the UCLA Law School, teaching Motion Picture Financing, and the UCLA Anderson School of Management, teaching Entertainment Law. He is listed in The Hollywood Reporter ESQ's "Power Lawyers Top 100", composed of leading corporate dealmakers who arrange film distribution and work with financiers to funnel money to Hollywood. Moreover, Schuyler was the founding Chairman of the Entertainment Tax Subsection of the Los Angeles County Bar Association, Taxation Section. He received his BA from UCLA in 1978 (summa cum laude) and his JD from UCLA School of Law in 1981 (first in his class). »
– Todd R. Steiner (topic): Todd structures and analyzes financing packages for clients including private investors, independent studios, as well as individual film, television and video-game producers. As Assistant Vice President in the Entertainment Group at Comerica Bank, he has partnered with investment banks, mezzanine and other senior debt providers while structuring and closing single-project, slate, and library-purchase transactions resulting in over $450mm in commitments by the Bank. After a deal is approved by the Bank's credit department, Todd works with sales agents, distributors, additional financiers and other parties as he oversees and manages Comerica's commitment. Most recently, he provided production financing for the smash-hit fighting thriller "Never Back Down" (Sean Faris, Amber Heard, Cam Gigandet) and other movies. Prior to Comerica, Todd worked in international theatrical marketing and distribution finance at The Walt Disney Company. Before that, he served as Director of Development at The Shooting Gallery (TSG) where he supervised the creative development and production of a yearly slate of feature films, including "You Can Count on Me" (Academy Award nomination), "Henry Fool" (Cannes Best Screenplay award) and "The Minus Man" (Sundance Grand Jury nomination). Todd graduated with a BA from Dartmouth College and earned an MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Management. »
– Jeff Franklin (topic): Jeff began his illustrious career in the music industry. In 1970, he formed American Talent International (ATI), which he built into one of the nation's foremost rock-n-roll booking agencies. Jeff acted as agent for some of the world's leading popular recording artists, including Bob Seger, Rod Stewart, Neil Young, The Eagles, KISS, John Mellencamp, Rush, Yes, and Dire Straits. In February 1985, he sold ATI to International Creative Management (ICM), where he served as a senior executive consultant. Jeff was also a partner in Casablanca Record and Filmworks, as well as Riva Records and Boardwalk Records. As a manager, he successfully handled the careers of George Clinton and Ernie Isley. As CEO of ATI Video Enterprises, Jeff produced television series and specials, including "Radio 1990", "Heartlight City", "Love Songs", "FM TV", "The Beach Boys", "Endless Summer", "Fall From Grace" and the cult classic "Night Flight". Since then, he has extended into theatrical feature films with much success, co-producing the 1995 smash hit "Casper" with Steven Spielberg and executive producing "Cold Around the Heart" (David Caruso, Kelly Lynch), "Kull the Conqueror" (Kevin Sorbo, Tia Carrere), "Stuart Little" (Michael J. Fox, Geena Davis, Hugh Laurie) as well as its sequel "Stuart Little 2". Currently, Jeff and his team control the estate of the late Marvin Gaye; they specialize in film production for the international marketplace. »
– Peter Russell (topic): As a sought-after Hollywood script consultant, Peter reads screenplays for a living. He currently works for Participant Media (f.k.a. Participant Productions) and Walden Media. In the recent past, Peter has worked for Imagine Entertainment, CBS Television, and various other production companies. He has been involved in the development of projects like "Chronicles Of Narnia" for Walden, "Food, Inc." for Participant, and an upcoming science-fiction movie for Imagine Films. Additionally, Peter teaches classes on film and television story at the Entertainment Division of UCLA's Extension School in Los Angeles. He also teaches his own private nine-week Master Class seminar on film story at his classroom in Venice, CA. Moreover, Peter is finishing a book for Focal Press titled "How Movies Work"; it is a guide to the mechanics of how Hollywood movies tell their stories, explaining precisely why US films are one of the country's most successful worldwide exports. Under the same title, he publishes a website as well. Peter is a former theater director for New York's Public Theater, and a graduate (cum laude) of Columbia University. »
– Todd Burns (topic): Todd is Co-Founder, Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Legal Counsel at Mpower Pictures and Mpower Media. He co-founded both companies with Steve McEveety, producer of "The Passion of the Christ" and "Braveheart", and John Shepherd, producer of "The Ultimate Gift" and "Bobby Jones". Mpower Pictures launched with the winner of the Toronto Film Festival People's Choice Award winner "Bella". In 2008, Todd produced the films "The Stoning of Soraya M." (winner of the LA Film Festival Audience Award), David Zucker's "An American Carol", "As We Forgive" (winner of the Student Academy Award for Best Documentary) and "The Jerk Theory". In 2009, he is currently in production on "Snowmen", starring Ray Liotta and prepping production on "Left to Tell", a New York Times bestselling book. Todd has extensive experience in all areas of motion picture production, including legal/business affairs and creative development. He has represented high net-worth individuals and international companies in their film investments. He has worked with Crystal Sky Pictures in business affairs and development, at a law firm in London, and alongside the US Peace Corps in Romania. Todd often speaks at universities and conferences on legal, finance, creative, marketing and strategy issues related to the entertainment industry. He has a JD/MBA from Pepperdine University and a BA from UCLA. Todd is a member of the California Bar Association. »
– Adrian Sexton (topic): Adrian is Co-Founder and CEO of New Medici, a media and lifestyle consultancy and niche media network. As former head of digital at two leading media companies, Lionsgate Entertainment (NYSE & TSX: LGF) and Participant Productions, he has a strong hybrid background in operational strategy, content and marketing/distribution. Prior to New Medici, Adrian was the Executive Vice President at Participant Media, responsible for running the company's expansion into global media, digital distribution and marketing. He recently worked on such Participant films as "The Soloist", "Food, Inc.", "The Visitor", "Charlie Wilson's War", "The Kite Runner" and the Academy Award-winning documentary "An Inconvenient Truth". Before Participant, Adrian co-founded TAG Strategic, a digital strategy agency with clients including Qualcomm, Lionsgate and Sandisk. Previously, he headed Lionsgate's digital media department, where he oversaw digital marketing and business development, shaping and executing the studio's strategy across broadband, mobile, IPTV and other emerging platforms. Lionsgate's market capitalization rose from $60 million to $1.2 billion during Adrian's tenure; and he was part of the team that secured the $350 million credit facility to acquire Artisan Entertainment. Adrian was New Media Director at MediaPact, a $500 million media management and investment capital firm which invested in and took over management of Lionsgate. He has worked on campaigns for the Academy Award-winning films "An Inconvenient Truth", "Crash" and "Monster's Ball", as well as the "Saw" and Tyler Perry franchises. His professional experience also includes work in television at Sony Pictures Entertainment, production and development at HBO Pictures, 20th Century Fox and Saban Entertainment. Adrian is a member of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and the Producers Guild of America. He graduated with a dual BA in Government and English from Cornell University and received his Master's in Film from the University of Southern California (USC) as a Phi Kappa Phi fellow. »
– Tyler Pukatch (moderator): Tyler got his start in the film industry as a red-carpet reporter for The Hollywood Reporter. He moved on to stints in public relations before settling with Hero Pictures, a Los Angeles-based start-up production company backed by a high-profile investor from Spain. At Hero, Tyler handles corporate structure, accounting and international taxation, as well as special projects. In addition, he assists the CEO in developing the company's movie production strategy and managing related financial matters. Tyler graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz with a degree in Legal Studies. »

The Institute for International Film Financing (IIFF) is an innovative, independent social-impact organization that endeavors to bridge the gap between the worlds of filmmaking and finance for the benefit of all stakeholders – including the public at large.
