Refraction Arts Project presents
THE ASSUMPTION
A rollicking, rock n' roll adventure
conceived and directed by Sonnet Blanton and Julia M. Smith
with text by Rebecca Beegle, Ron Berry, Jeffery Mills, Chase Staggs, and Cyndi Williams

October 20 - November 10, 2006

Something is soft and dirty and wet. Something is loud and dark and wicked. Something is wild and stompy and crude. Something is rotten.

Julia M. Smith and Sonnet Blanton, co-creators of last year's acclaimed The Philomel Project, have embarked on a new project very loosely based on Hamlet: The Assumption. The Assumption, produced by Refraction Arts Project and opening at the Blue Theater October 20th, is the story of a music-worshipping, cousin-kissing, kung fu-fighting high-loving, Japanese/White Trash Royal family in a holler on the edge of nowhere. The play will feature floods, tires, fake wrestling, big hair, dirty words, teddy bears of various size and incarnation, and original music by some of Austin's best songwriters played by a full band onstage every night. The star-studded cast includes Ron Berry, Roz Mandola, Carra Martinez, Jeffrey Mills, Adriene Mishler, Smith, and Cyndi Williams.

Performances:
Thursdays - Saturdays, October 20 - November 10 @ 8 pm.
Special late night performances 10pm October 28 and November 4
(Note: NO performances Saturday, November 11)

Tickets: Sliding Scale -- $12-$25
Thursdays are pay-what-you-can.

The New York Times called The Philomel Project, Smith and Blanton's last work, "raucous and disturbing," "brisk, irreverent," and full of "vulgarity and wit."

New York Magazine called the piece, "a darkly provocative...strikingly theatrical feast."

Refraction Arts Project

Refraction Arts Project is dedicated to creating bold new works of art across a variety of media, including film, theater, art and music. We are especially interested in the intersection of these different media as we search for new stories, new sounds and images that pulse with life. As artists we feel it is paramount to continue learning about the world in an active and vigorous fashion. To participate, openly and fully, creating a dialogue between our selves, our work, and our community. Our vision is an immediate one, one we hope offers possibility and new ways of looking at the world. We pledge to create our art with a diligence and playful fervor and to continue to build a body of work that is alive and challenging and accessible. We pledge to speak the truth as we see it, without concealment or evasion and with a fearless unashamed frontal assault upon life that will leave no room for trepidation . . . We hope you join us.
