Get F'IT august 2012: Regulation or freedom of choice - What is the future for our risk profile
CFIR invites you to a Get F'IT-meeting about new ideas in risk management and financial stress testing.
Today we have a dilemma. Government wants to control how much risk the financial institutions take. The financial institutions want to control how much risk their customers take. Control is considered necessary in order to assure that the risk owner’s values are real – particularly long term. But the risk owners (financial institutions and their customers) want to have freedom with respect to choice of risk profile. The risk owners consider risk-freedom necessary in order to pursue growth and prosperity.
At the moment, it seems that we face tighter regulation, despite our wish for freedom. That is clearly a dilemma.
But new research into (financial) risk may provide a path towards less regulation and more freedom.
New research show, that current financial practice, leads to an understatement of risk associated cost. Risk is too cheap. It also shows that the value of financial security is understated. If we manage to correct the cost of risk assessment, the decision maker will achieve a higher return on investment, by being better at selecting cost efficient investments, and by maintaining well-proportioned capital reserves.
The financial stress testing system will be used as basis for a discussion on what changes that is necessary in order to capture the new cost of risk component.
