*Advanced Safety and Technology

Presenter: Kim Wiley

A great deal of identifying information about individuals is available online and individuals are increasingly conducting personal business through online access to all types of accounts. This plethora of information available through data brokers and social media tools poses great barriers to survivors trying to escape domestic violence. Building on her morning keynote session, Kim Wiley will address social networking, data brokering, and smart phone technology. Ms. Wiley will provide tools for reducing a survivors risk without having to ‘live off the grid.’ In addition, workshop attendees will become familiar with the new Stalking Injunction for Protection and documenting evidence of cyberstalking.

*Teen Dating Violence and Technology

Presenter: Kim Wiley

Youth use technology for nearly all interactions: communication, education, entertainment and just out and about. This use of technology poses many great benefits as well as risks. As service providers for teens you have a responsibility to address and support the safe use of technology. Through case examples, Ms. Wiley explore teens use and misuse of technology. In this multi-media workshop, she will demonstrate technology used by youth to harass, monitor and threaten and provide tools to support survivors of teen dating violence.

*Counseling Decisions in the LGBT Community: Mindful Considerations

Presenter: Frank Ledda

This training will discuss things to be aware of when dealing with folks in the LGBT community such as effects of heterosexism and homophobia on clients and how these phenomenons impact counselor tolerance to difference, coming out process, relationships/sexuality, violence toward the LGBT community and within the community etc....

*Working with Victims of Elder Abuse

Presenter: Gina Vittone

Persons over the age of 60 are the fastest growing segment of the population of the United States. As the older adult population continues to increase nationally, the older population in Florida grows at an even faster rate. As stated on the Aging Services portion of the Hillsborough County Government website, more than 178,000 people in Hillsborough County are over the age of 60. While a number of these older adults are Florida natives, with families who are able to care for them, retire to the state and are without family to assist them as they become more vulnerable. The Elder Justice Center, which was established to ensure that elderly citizens of Hillsborough County have fair and reasonable access to the courts, is just one example of how courts can be proactive in meeting the needs of this growing population. Courts can also help ensure full access and participation by older persons with a physical or mental limitation by making accommodations to the courtroom setting, the handling of court hearings, and case and calendar management. Educating the judiciary and the bar is an important part of making this a reality.

*Assessing Batters Intervention Program Treatment Gains

Presenter: Dr. Bob Wright

When individuals graduate from Batterer Intervention Programs, they are given a certificate documenting successful completion of the program. This workshop will examine whether a General Statement of Completion is sufficient given that victims may decide to remain in relationships with graduates based primarily on the batterer’s successful completion of such a program. A more individualized method of appraising and communicating treatment outcomes will be presented that provides a differential assessment of progress along dimensions that will assist third parties to more accurately examine graduates’ risks of future domestic violence.

It is the policy of Family Justice Center of Hillsborough County that a training credit will be made for cancellations made a minimum of 72 hours prior to the event.

No refund or training credit will be issued for those cancellations made less than 72 hours in advance of the start of the event.
