In the 1920’s and 1930’s in inner Sydney, some of the most terrifying criminals in Australia’s history waged war with razor and gun. As gang fought gang, the streets ran with blood. At the helm of this chaos were two women who called the shots and as fear gripped Sydney, their empire grew. This is the untold story of Sydney – and the backbone to the struggle of working class Australia to survive in the unforgiving city… whatever it takes – above or below the law.

“Mum’s In: Stories from Razorhurst” is a one-woman, performance piece which lifts the veil on the Razor Gang era in Sydney during the 1930’s, where sly grog, prostitution, cocaine and extortion were the commodities of the East Sydney underground. This dark comedy cabaret features the notorious characters of Kate Leigh, Tilly Devine, Frank Green, Nelly Cameron and Guido Calleti.

Sometimes savage, sometimes hilarious these characters are an intrinsic part of Sydney’s dark history. Their barbaric actions have linked them forever to the stories of Kings Cross, Surry Hills, Darlinghurst and Wooloomooloo. Vashti Hughes brings these ingenious, violent and fascinating Sydney criminals to life in this original and dark cabaret piece.

Written and Performed by Vashti Hughes
Directed by James Winter
Music by Ross Johnston

Audience Reviews:

"I went to see an amazing show on Sun called Mum’s In by Vashti Hughes – a one woman show playing four characters (sometimes all at once!) from the infamous Razorhurst era. Forget that silly trifling show that was on tv a while back – this is as close as you’ll get to the real thing. Set at home in a Kings Cross boudoir style bar, you are treated to a shivoo with Tilly Devine, Kate Leigh, Nellie Cameron and Frank Green. It’s even better if you dress up coz YOU FEEL LIKE YOU WERE THERE! It’s on every Sunday for 3 months, before the 6 o’clock swill so get over there and cheers a toast to Sydney’s nefarious past with a talented lady. Oh, and for gods sake, leave your razors behind.. you don’t want another blue…" Venus Vamp

"Superb. In fact….., Criminal!" Leonie Cohen
