Abstract:

Application environments and even languages get popular and wane. Once companies invest in a particular application environment, it is usually stuck with its decision. Migration to the next generation platform is difficult and costly.
Raptor is the next generation application platform and environment for eBay. Using OSGI (Open Grid Services Infrastructure) technologies and application environment independence, it allows an easy integration of multiple application platforms/frameworks, or even languages. Raptor allows for non-disruptive adaptations to newer platforms and application environments as they emerge.
In this session, hear how Raptor as a platform endorses and unblocks new innovations to be used in eBay without revamping the whole eBay application infrastructure..

Bio:

Akara Sucharitakul has worked in the IT sector for over 20 years with a focus in systems architecture and performance engineering. He as one of the designers of ECperf, a JavaEE application and performance benchmark that later became SPECjAppServer and then SPECjEnterprise 2010. He remained an active participant in SPEC until the finish of SPECjEnterprise 2010. Akara has a long history in open source. He was the primary architect of Faban (http://faban.org), a framework and component model for performance measurement workloads. He also was a committer to Apache Olio (incubator), a study comparing PHP and Java. Faban is the core measurement engine for SPECjEnterprise 2010 and Apache Olio. At eBay, Akara was initially trying to solve the problem of code complexity and the ability to leverage open source technologies without incurring disruptive changes. The resulting design concept became a core part of project Raptor, eBay’s latest generation core platform.

Ron Murphy is a framework enthusiast dating back to his early days with Lego sets. The advent of OOP provided a safe environment for Ron to try out modularity concepts in the software world. Ron has implemented a variety of systems covering email, network management, workflow, distributed object technology, web services, and SOA. Most recently Ron has helped move eBay to a service-oriented architecture and he is now helping bring about an OSGI transformation for eBay.
