Co-Occurring Eating Disorders and Substance Use Disorders Using Integrative Medicine
When: August 3rd, 2012 (Friday), 8:00am-4:30pm
Where: Atlanta Marriott Perimeter Center, 246 Perimeter Center Parkway NE, Atlanta, GA 30346
Cost: $85 for Early Bird registration before July 20th, $95 after July 20th
Chemical dependency and eating disorders share many components and characteristics including co-occurring Axis I and II disorders. These disorders are unified by disturbances in neurotransmitters in the brain. It is not uncommon that eating disorders will become active or be diagnosed for the first time when the individual seeks treatment for substance use disorders (SUD). This element of cross-addiction speaks to the fact that for many individuals, there may be common etiological factors, including family history of SUD, trauma and major depression that promote the development and maintenance of both SUD and ED. Often individuals with co-occurring disorders may have resistance or be in denial that they need treatment for either their eating disorder or their substance use disorder. Not receiving treatment for eating disorder or the substance use disorder can lead to recurrent relapses. Integrative medicine is an important tool in addressing the brain chemistry and nutritional deficits associated with both ED and SUD. As well, integrative medicine is uniquely able to address the dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (hyperactivity of the stress response) that is common to both and which puts clients at high risk for relapse.
1. Participants will be able to describe two examples of “stress reaction” and its relationship to relapse as well as how integrative medicine can affect the release of stress chemicals as a therapy for relapse prevention.
2. Participants will identify two strategies for addressing resistance and denial in individuals with dual diagnosis eating disorders (ED) and substance use disorders (SUD).
3. Participants will be able to list three dietary supplements that can be used to treat abuse.
4. Participants will identify three co-occurring disorders associated with SUD and ED.
5. Participants will identify three screening procedures for diagnosing eating disorders and substance use disorders.
6. Participants will be able to list two nutritional deficits common in the eating disorder/substance use disorder and the symptoms associated with each.
