Course Description

The objective of the SHP Desk Guide training is to provide participants with an understanding of new policy clarifications included in the revised SHP Desk Guide published in 2008 as well as solutions to address common monitoring issues.

The SHP Desk Guide training addresses the following topics:

  • Top ten things to know about the HEARTH Act
  • Tips and tools for using the SHP Desk Guide
  • Crosswalk comparison of original Desk Guide and revised Desk Guide highlighting new policy clarifications
  • How to use the Desk Guide to avoid and address common monitoring issues including:
    • Participant Eligibility
    • Eligible Activities
    • Match
    • Time Distribution
    • Fiscal Draws
    • Program Fees
    • Calculating Resident Rent
    • Financial Management Systems
    • Project Renewals, Grant Amendments, and Extensions

Participants should review the updated SHP Desk Guide, available at http://www.hudhre.info, prior to the training. Please bring a copy of the Desk Guide with you to the training.

The SHP Desk Guide training differs from the Homelessness 101 training in that it does not provide an introduction to managing HUD Continuum of Care homeless assistance grants. Rather the training focuses in-depth on program policies and grant management issues. Grantees and sponsors interested in Homelessness 101 materials can access them on the HomeBase website:  http://www.homebaseccc.org/ HUD_TAmaterials.html

Who Should Attend

The training is appropriate for financial and program staff who are new to using the SHP Desk Guide, as well as for for experienced staff who are interested in learning what has changed in the SHP Desk Guide. All participants will benefit from learning about policy updates and common monitoring issues.

Cost

The training and material are provided free of charge by HUD. Registration is required to attend.
