Crash Course: HTML/CSS 1 Week Intensive

Chris Castiglione, Digital Product Developer

1-week series, July 30th - August 6th 2-6PM (Dates below)

Objectives:

In this one week intensive course we’re diving head first into HTML & CSS.  In my work, I’ve discovered that I could be a better programmer by focusing on the good parts of a language, and avoiding the bad parts. After all, can you really build something with bad parts? In this class we’re taking a project-based learning approach to HTML & CSS that focuses on learning a subset of the good parts so that we can make something (quick and) awesome.

In only one week we’ll tackle the barebones of how to quickly develop a web site, and get it live on the Web.

Homework: There will be a daily homework assignment that should take approximately 30 min.

Prerequisites: Basic HTML experience may be helpful, although if you are totally new to HTML please email the instructor prior to class for an introductory tutorial. All students must be able to bring a laptop to class (Mac preferred).

  • Class 1 (7/30, 2-6PM): Developing a Web Template: HTML/CSS getting started & best-practices, using
    and IDs
  • Class 2 (7/31, 2-6PM): Layout: Classes, floats, SEO best-practices
  • Class 3 (8/1, 2-6PM): Page Structure: New HTML5 elements, 3 column layouts, developing headers, footers, sidebars
  • Class 4 (8/2, 2-6PM): Navigation & Sprites: Developing a site navigation and sprites
  • Class 5 (8/3, 2-6PM): Typography: Use advanced web typography in your project
  • Class 6 (8/6, 2-6PM): Lab Project: Responsive design, and media queries
