Hola!

This summer, we're offering a fun and innovative new advanced Spanish class in which students will watch and discuss three Spanish-language movies. The movies will be a mix of classic and contemporary films from different Spanish-speaking countries.

Watching original-language movies is a great way to improve your colloquial Spanish and to build your comprehension and speaking. Every week, we'll discuss the plots and the cultural context, and the instructor (Juan, from Colombia) will align the week's discussion with the review of grammar, vocabulary and idiomatic expressions.

Movie Schedule: 1.) Seres Queridos 2.) La Historia Oficial 3.) Casi Divas 4.) Medianeras 5.) Voces Inocentes 6.) Cerro Rico, Tierra Rica 7.) El Aura (Note: You do not need to prepare anything for the first class).

Is this class for you?

This course is intended for people who are already familiar with the basics of Spanish grammar and are fairly conversant in the present, simple past, and simple future tenses.

Students should be able to speak and understand at a fairly good level, even if they aren't perfectly fluent and make some mistakes, as the class will be conducted entirely in Spanish.

About this class

This course is 8 weeks long and meets for 90 minutes per weekly session. Class size is limited to 14 people.

This course will be taught by Juan Vallejo, a native of Colombia with several years' experience teaching Spanish in New York, including at Berlitz and privately.

* We strongly recommend that students have a Netflix subscription so they can watch the films on their own before class. We will also schedule a time when students can come to watch the films at our shop but we won't be screening the films in class, and students may want to be able to rewind and review parts of the film at their leisure. We will finalize and send a list of the films to registered students by mid-June.

There are no make-up classes. On the first day of class, each student will receive a syllabus that lists the weekly assignments so you can keep up with your studies if you have to miss a class.

If you wish to cancel your registration, you must contact Idlewild by telephone or email at least seven days before the start date of your class to receive a refund.

If you wish to postpone your registration to a later session, you must contact Idlewild by telephone or email at least three days before the start date of your class to receive a credit toward a future session (good for one year).
