Social Finance and Nonprofits: the Contribution of Social Finance to the Sustainability of Nonprofit Organizations and Social Enterprises
Social finance is investing and lending that seeks social and/or environmental impact while producing a financial return. This approach to finance has attracted growing attention internationally with the relatively strong performance of socially responsible investment funds in the midst of the 2008 global financial crisis, “Big Society” as the focal point of the United Kingdom’s coalition government and Kramer & Porter’s 2011 article in the Harvard Business Review on creating shared value. In Canada, release in November 2010 of the Canadian Task Force on Social Finance’s report Mobilizing Private Capital for the Public Good and the creation of the Centre for Impact Investing at the MaRS Discovery District have brought new focus to the role of social finance in our society.
With support from Mount Royal University’s Institute for Nonprofit Studies, Olaf Weber and Sean Geobey from the University of Waterloo conducted a survey of Canadian social finance providers to better understand how they view risk and select their social finance portfolios.
1. The survey gives answers on questions like What are the goals, practices, opportunities and challenges of different groups of social finance institutions with respect to financing nonprofits and social enterprises?
2. How may nonprofits and social enterprises use this knowledge to finance themselves?
Through the MaRS Discovery District’s Centre for Impact Investing we are hosting a webinar to provide social finance practitioners, members of the mainstream financial community, academics, social entrepreneurs and anyone else with an interest in social finance with an overview of the results of our recent survey of social finance providers. Our findings outline how Canadian social financiers perceive risk in their social finance investments and will compare their views of for-profit, non-profit, public sector and social enterprise investments.
Please join us for a webinar on June 28th at 12:00pm ET as we release our initial findings followed by a question and answer session with our webinar participants.
