Course Runs for Three Consecutive Saturdays, July 14, 21 and 28 from 10AM-2PM

Synthetic biology is the science of engineering living organisms as if they were biological machines. You’ll learn how to manipulate life using standardized genetic parts. These genetic sequences serve as building blocks in the fabrication of genetic “circuits,” previously unseen in nature. Among many applications, this rapidly maturing technology is currently being harnessed to cheaply create life saving drugs, such as anti-malarial compounds, bio-fuels to reduce dependence on petroleum based fuel sources and "bio-sensors" to detect a wide variety of environmental pollutants and pathogens . As part of this very hands-on-course, we’ll analyze pathways that enable engineered micro-organisms to smell like bananas, create cells that produce colorful pigments and also attempt to build our very own bio-sensor that can respond to blue light!

Taught by Oliver Medvedik, Ph.D.
