Eye Care. Do You? (Screening of First Sight- The Film)
Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at 6:30 PM - Saturday, June 30, 2012 at 8:30 PM (EDT)
New York, NY
Hi. My name is Joya. My goal with "First Sight,' the film, is to educate viewers about the magnitude of curable blindness in the world. Did you know that you could become part of a World Health Organization initiative to eradicate curable blindness in the world by the year 2020? With help from Marcelo Bukin, who provides the beautiful cinematography, and Anandan Sivamani, who provides the gripping music, I tell a story that hopefully moves you to donate your money.

India is home to a quarter of the world's blind children. We, as Americans, could get cataracts zapped in an afternoon's visit to the eye doctor. But in a fatalistic society, many of the poor and ill-educated members of the rural population just 'live with it." After all, it was God's will that was wrought upon them.
"First Sight" follows three of the most vulnerable members of the afflicted population in India--children. This 50-minute documentary tracks Anitha, Ranjith and Balaji as they prepare for and undergo life-changing eye surgeries at a foundation hospital in Tamil Nadu.
It all began as part of a community eye movement in the 1970s. One doctor broke down all social barriers by bringing healthcare directly to patients. And totally for free.
