How does virtual learning work for emotional intelligence?
A growing mandate to better match program offerings to individual learner need and abilities is driving the development of expert system technologies to accelerate the process. This is true in reading and math. It is increasingly true with SEL as well. It’s counter-intuitive that machines could teach people to feel. They don’t feel themselves and programmers have not been able to program common sense into even the most intelligent robot. Nonetheless research has shown that students are learning empathy and problem solving skills from a computer-based program called Ripple Effects. Rather than reducing the quality or quantity of human interaction, it adds to both.
Ripple Effects is now used in thousands of schools in hundreds of school districts in the US and beyond for universal SEL promotion, targeted prevention and indicated intervention, especially in discipline and special education settings. It is listed on the National Registry of Evidence Proven Practices as a Children’s Mental Health Intervention with documented positive impacts on both internal resiliency assets and external outcomes, including retention in school and GPA. It effectively addresses three of the most common reasons that excellent programs fail to successfully scale: implementers’ own EQ, lack of domain expertise, and deficits in instructional methodologies. Yet it is not a panacea. There are many things it can not do, and many technology-based programs that are ineffective.

About the Presenter
For more than 30 years Alice Ray has been a leader in translating social-emotional research into engaging, evidence-based programs to prevent children’s social injury and promote their school and life success. The original catalyst behind the development of the popular and evidence-based Second Step program, she co-founded Ripple Effects to to develop next generation technology-enhanced resources to increase student engagement, ensure greater fidelity to evidence-based practices and provide easy-to-access data to further research efforts. She has written and spoken extensively on these issues internationally and has been recognized with dozens of major awards for her work as a social entrepreneur, software designer, and filmmaker.
