24EQ: The RULER Approach to Building Emotionally Literate Schools
Friday, July 6, 2012 from 4:00 PM to 4:50 PM (EDT)
The 24EQ Conference presents Marc Brackett...
A skill-based, sustainable approach to building emotionally literate schools
How can emotional literacy skills improve learning?
How are you feeling? It’s not an idle question. Feelings matter! Dr. Marc Brackett will discuss The RULER Approach to Social and Emotional Learning that is now embedded into hundreds of schools throughout the United States and in other countries.
The RULER Approach is an outgrowth of decades of research on emotional intelligence conducted by the Health, Emotion, and Behavior Laboratory at Yale University demonstrating that five key emotional skills are integral to learning, decision making, physical and mental health, and achieving success at school and in everyday life. We make the case that in order to create caring, productive, and engaging learning environments, where students thrive and become successful citizens, it is necessary for schools to provide structured learning opportunities for all students and stakeholders (school leaders, teachers, support staff, and families) to develop and model the skills of Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing, and Regulating emotion (the "RULER" skills).
The RULER Approach is evidence-based and sustainable: it offers professional development training and coaching, instructional practices and tools for all stakeholders and has been shown in experiments to enhance social and emotional development, school climate, and academic achievement.
