Event Details

This event has been canceled.

How many artists get arrested for grand larceny or end up drug addicts? Artist John La Farge did both. How many people get buried in the wrong place? La Farge’s will specified Woodlawn Cemetery, but he was interred in his parents’ Green-Wood mausoleum. Despite being a pioneer of American stained glass, La Farge’s life was one of wrong turns, wrong decisions and disappointments.

Join Dr. James L. Yarnall, author of the just-published John La Farge, A Biographical and Critical Study, to hear about La Farge’s scandals, successes and disastrous professional relationships—a story that is all the more remarkable because it has been largely unknown for a century. Following the talk in our Historic Chapel, join Green-Wood historian Jeff Richman for a trolley tour with stops at the final resting places of La Farge and his bitter rival Louis Comfort Tiffany, as well as other related Green-Wood sites.

This event has two parts, with separate tickets for each part:

1. The free book talk/presentation in the historic Green-Wood chapel, ending with a book signing.

2. A guided trolley tour immediately following the talk. Tour tickets are $15 for members of the Green-Wood Historic Fund and $20 for non-members.

Seating is limited for both the talk and the trolley tour, and reservations are recommended. To purchase tickets, call 718-210-3080 or order online using Eventbrite.
