Kate Mitchell, one of the architects of the JOBS Act, will speak about how this landmark piece of legislation was passed and what it means to our industry. Kate will discuss the process, the outcome, the compromises, the victories and the losses. For those still wondering what is really in the JOBS Act and what it will mean for our industry, this is an opportunity to ask one of the authors.

Kate is a co-founder of Scale Venture Partners, a venture capital fund with over $900 million under management located in Silicon Valley, California. She leads investments in software bringing more than 25 years' experience in technology, finance and management to her portfolio. Kate has actively worked with portfolio companies such as Hubspan, Jaspersoft, mBlox, Wayport, & Tonic Software as they grow to become successful enterprises. She was the 2010-2011 Chairman of the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA) and remains active in policy matters that impact start-ups & innovation. Kate most recently chaired the IPO Task Force, whose recommendations to reform the IPO market were included in the JOBS Act, recently passed by the House and Senate, and signed into law by the President in early April. In addition, Kate is a member of the Silicon Valley Bank Board of Directors (NASDAQ: SIVB).
Prior to becoming a venture capitalist, Kate held various corporate development and technology management positions at Bank of America and was responsible, among other things, for the launch of the bank's initial online banking presence in the mid 1990's. Kate holds a BA from Stanford University and an MBA from the Executive Program at Golden Gate University in San Francisco. She also attended the Harvard Executive Program. Kate is active as a Charter Member of Environmental Entrepreneurs (Silicon Valley).

In 1962, some of the industry's original venture investors began meeting in San Francisco's Olympic Club to share ideas—and deals. Informal at first, the group's popularity took hold and by 1969, it became the first official non-profit venture capital organization in the world—the Western Association of Venture Capitalists. Some 40 years later, WAVC is made up of over 130 venture firms and some 800 venture capitalists.
WAVC still offers West Coast venture capitalists the opportunity to come together to socialize, share insights, and discuss deals. Today, WAVC's primary focus is its distinguished speaker series, which has hosted more than 500 of the country's most celebrated business, financial, government, and academic leaders—from Dianne Feinstein and George Schultz, to Eric Schmidt, Meg Whitman, John Chambers, Peter Drucker and Geoffrey Moore. Exclusive to WAVC members, these luncheon events are thought provoking and informative.
