Sustainability Base is a highly intelligent and intuitive facility designed to anticipate and react to changes in sunlight, temperature, wind and occupancy. This smart building can optimize its performance automatically, in real time, in response to internal and external changes. It has been certified the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum status, which is the highest LEED rating.

Meeting the White House challenge to lead by example, NASA has repurposed its technologies and incorporated them into the new building. Sustainability Base features a Bloom Energy Box, for example, that uses fuel cell technology in a clean electrical-chemical process to produce electricity. The facility also has a water recovery system, derived from one originally designed for the International Space Station, which reduces unnecessary consumption of potable water.

• How the decision making process went for LEED certification to happen (before and during construction)

Speakers:

Dr. Steve Zornetzer, Associate Center Director, NASA Ames Research Center
Dr. Zornetzer is the Associate Center Director at NASA Ames Research Center. He has served as the Deputy Center Director and Center Director (Acting). Prior to that he served as Director of Information Sciences and Technology at NASA Ames. He is an internationally recognized leader in neuroscience and revolutionary, information technology-based applications to aerospace and space exploration missions. The breadth of his expertise ranges from basic research in cognitive, perceptual and neural sciences to applied research in integrative biology, biological information processing, molecular biology, genetic engineering and biomedical science. He plans, directs and coordinates the technology, science, development and operational activities for research and advanced technology across a broad spectrum of research and development including information technology.

He also serves as advisor and consultant to senior management officials at other Government agencies in matters concerning supercomputing, optical systems, networks and intelligent systems. Dr. Zornetzer was recognized for his contributions to NASA by receiving the Presidential Meritorious Rank Award in 2001 from President Bush. Before joining NASA in 1997, he headed the Life Sciences Directorate at the Office of Naval Research (ONR). Dr. Zornetzer was widely recognized for his leadership and vision at ONR and received a Presidential Meritorious Rank in 1991 and the Presidential Distinguished Rank Award in 2008 from President Bush. Before joining government service Dr. Zornetzer was a faculty member at the University of California, Irvine. He has over 80 journal publications and has published 3 books.


Jack Carter,  Project Executive,  Swinerton Builders
Jack Carter has spent more than 20 years in the construction industry working on a wide variety of projects, including boarding areas at SFO, high-rise office towers, retail centers, and the NASA Sustainability Base. Currently a Project Executive at Swinerton Builders, Jack has developed his expertise managing financial feasibility, scheduling, design teams, entitlement issues, public affairs, and sales and market­ing on complicated construction jobs. Prior to Swinerton, he worked as an Engineer for Herrick Steel and Chicago Bridge and Iron. Jack is a USGBC LEED Accredited Professional and earned a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Pennsylvania State University. He is a a key team member on this NASA project and has presented a graduate at UC Berkeley on this topic.

VTA Light Rail NASA / Bayshore Station and walk. The NASA stop is on the Mountain View – I-880/Milpitas line which runs between downtown Mountain View and Milpitas . Riders can make connections to the Baypointe – Santa Teresa Line at the Baypointe station. CAL Train Mountain View Station is about 3 miles away; where you can transfer to the VTA light rail to get to NASA Valley Transportation Authority Bus Line 902 goes to NASA Altamont Commuter Express (ACE) The closest ACE rail station is the Great America station located on Lafayette Street at Tasman Drive. Patrons can transfer directly to the VTA LRT at the Lick Mill station.
