Synopsis

Agile Project Management: a trade-off between pro-activity and re-activity

An exponential increase in complexity, a strong reduction of a product's lifecycle and market time frames are drastically challenging projects and their success.

In a context like this, what tools and techniques can be used by project management?

"A proactive approach" would seem to be highly effective:  by having a strong focus on the planning and analysis phases, proactively addressing known problems and influencing or conditioning others as they encounter uncertain scenarios.

But, is trying to anticipate any decision of an unpredictable future the best solution? Not always.

Alternatively, "a reactive approach" puts less effort on planning and greater attention in tackling any change or unanticipated events, in order to manage them immediately.

However, risk management says that un-identified risks or problems are implicitly accepted:  having said that, are we really sure that we can afford such a reactive approach? Not always.

Many theories promote a traditional, theoretical approach in managing complexity within projects, but this does not always work.

Agile, indeed, being completely geared on the empirical approach helps to face such a complexity, helping to find the right balance between proactivity and reactivity, thanks to transparency, inspection and adaptation.

Key take-aways:

Understanding how complexity can be reduced and faced through an agile approach

Learning about how the requirements are gathered, managed and decomposed through an iterative approach

Appreciating the ProductOwner role in Scrum (similar to a BA) as a pivotal figure in balancing the two approaches above mentionedSpace is filling up quickly, so please register now!
