  • Course Description

     

    This two-day garden design course will teach you design techniques, give you insider knowledge and offer hands on help to let you create a design for your own garden which will suit your family perfectly.

    On signing up to the course, you will receive a pack of information which will help you survey your own garden space, including a video tutorial and surveying kit. From this you will be able to draw up a scale plan of your garden to bring to the session. The pack will also contain a template document that you can share with your family and complete to give you a full brief for what you need from your outdoor space.

     

  • What's Included

     

     

    Day One
     
    Tea/coffee – welcome and a chance to get to know Dawn and the rest of the group
     
    First morning session – Introduction to Family Garden Design
    Dawn will give an overview of the special problems faced by a family garden situation as well as offering some inspirational ideas for addressing them. This will be followed by an outline of the grid technique which participants will be using to design their gardens
     
    Second morning session – Practical Session: Playing with the Space 
    Participants will be given drawing boards and materials to begin their outline shape designs with Dawn on hand to help and guide throughout the session.
     
    Lunch
     
    First afternoon session – Introducing Garden Areas and Features
    Dawn will focus on the main areas needed in a garden layout and give advice on elements to consider such as dimensions, suitable materials, height changes etc
     
    Second afternoon session – Practical Session: Bringing the Space to Life
    Participants will return to their drawing boards and begin to translate their overall shapes layout into real garden areas. Again, Dawn will spend time with each participant and be on hand to answer queries and help solve design issues.
     
    Day Two
     
    First morning session – Budgets and Builders, the Inside Story
    Dawn will give overall advice on how to translate a design into reality including a look at budgets and how to adjust costs through use of different materials etc, landscapers – how to find them and ensure you get the best results, suppliers – where to go to find the best value materials and garden features
     
    Second morning session – Practical Session: Detailing the Design 
    Participants will work on completing their garden designs with Dawn’s help, including choosing materials and deciding on all final garden features.  At the end of this session the designs will be sent for photocopying ready to take home when the course finishes.
     
    Lunch
     
    First afternoon session – An Introduction to Planting
    Dawn will go through some of the useful plants to include in your border designs from good trees for small gardens to architectural and screening plants and useful perennials and annuals.
     
    Second afternoon session – Practical session: Planning a Border
    Participants will return to drawing boards to create their own small border designs for a particular situation they face in their garden – eg a shady, dry spot/ an edible garden/ a particular colour scheme etc.  Dawn will be on hand to help with plant selections and layout.  Participants will also be given a useful book to help with plant selection as well as information pack from Dawn on good plants for a family garden.

     

     

  • Tutor Details

     

    Dawn Isaac is a Chelsea Flower Show award winning garden designer and a mother of three young children. She combines her two main passions of gardening and her kids by trying to pass on her love of all things horticultural to Ava (8), Oscar (6) and Archie (3) – a quest which is chronicled on her popular blog, which has had well over a quarter of a million visits and is the featured blog on the RHS family website.

     
    Dawn also writes on garden design issues for the Guardian for which she won the New Talent Award from the Garden Media Guild in 2010 and her first book, Garden Crafts for Children, was published in February 2012.
     
    In 2010 Dawn took on the role as gardening consultant for Mr Bloom’s Nursery; the award winning children’s TV show from the BBC which is now in its second series.
     
    After reading history at Cambridge and spending seven years in the world of PR, Dawn abandoned the corporate world and studied at the English Gardening School before setting up her own garden design business, taking on private clients as well as undertaking several projects with primary and secondary schools.
     
    In 2005, Dawn created her first Chelsea Flower Show garden, the SoGo Garden for Microsoft. Not only did the garden receive a silver gilt medal, but it also became the first ever garden to be auctioned on eBay and attracted an outstanding amount of national newspaper coverage, with the garden being featured on the BBC coverage and Dawn doing an interview for BBC Breakfast News.
     
    Dawn’s design and written work have also featured in Good Housekeeping, The Garden, Garden Life, Living etc and Junior magazine. In September 2011 she also filed her first report for BBC Radio 4’s Gardeners’ Question Time.

So what is this Academy thing?
 
We're very excited to be launching The Mumsnet Academy - a brand new enterprise which aims to curate a portfolio of fantastic courses to fit around family commitments and busy working lives.
 
A while back we asked you what courses you would like and the programme of masterclasses, workshops, and events we've come up with is a reflection of your  responses.
 
To help us deliver the programme we have enlisted some fabulous experts in a range of fields as well as teaming up with some great partners who have a reputation for delivering high-quality, life-changing courses.
 
This collaborative approach allows us to offer a programme across a range of different subjects including entrepreneurship, business, technology, social media, blogging, history of art, creative writing, publishing, gardening, philosophy, finance, fashion as well as courses concerned with self-improvement and the concept of learning to live wisely and well. Some of these courses will be skill-based, while others will explore concepts, theory and ideas. 
 
If we've missed something you think is a must, fear not, we will be adding classes to our portfolio all the time so please drop us a line or complete the suggestion box on our website.
 
One of the things that we felt was important was to ensure our Academy courses are available across the UK and we are pleased to announce that we will be running events in Birmingham, Edinburgh, London and Manchester from day one. We are also keen to develop some online courses and hope to announce the first of these later this year.
 
While our courses are scheduled at times which are more convenient for those with young children, they are absolutely open to everyone. Ultimately, the overall aim of the Mumsnet Academy is to bring people together in a thought-provoking and fulfilling environment where there is a universal willingness to explore ideas, develop skills, and learn from experts as well from each other.
