Disabled Access Workshop: Accessibility of Residential Occupancies & Healthcare Accessibility Requirements 

 

This course meets the California State Architecture Board License requirements on Continuing Education for Disabled Access Requirements and CASp certification renewal.

 

This two-part workshop will begin with discussion on Accessibility of Residential Occupancies.  Topics include; scoping requirements, access in common areas, project funding and use issues, and “existing” residential facility requirements under the Federal and State Fair Housing accessibility regulations. In the afternoon, an in-depth review of the ADA Standards with respect to Healthcare Facilities and the proposed regulations for Access to Medical Equipment.  Both workshops will give you a solid understanding of the Federal and State Access Regulations as well as prepare you to forecast and prepare for future accessibility capital improvements.  Bring questions and scenarios to discuss!

 

I. Accessibility of Residential Occupancies (2.5 HSWs/MCEs)  9:00 am – 11:30 am

•             Compliance under FHA

·                 Scoping of residential amenities under FHA and ADA

•             Significance aspects of state and federal residential accessibility laws, standards, guidelines, provisions, statues and interpretations

•             Site Access in residential properties

•             Review of complex access scenarios for residential applications

II. Healthcare Accessibility Requirements (2.5 HSWs/MCEs)  12:30 pm – 3:00 pm

 

Key Topics:

•             Awareness of Federal and State requirements

·                 Learn specific access requirements for Healthcare Facilities

•             Understanding regulations for project Scoping and property Alterations

•             Design of Exam, Patient, Toilet and Waiting Rooms and Medical Equipment

•             Review of Accessible Elements of Healthcare Design

•             Accessibility Resources

 

SPEAKER:

Dawn Anderson, AIA, CASP, IOR

 

Ms Anderson is the principal architect of As It Stands, a California based woman-owned consulting firm that provides quality assurance and inspection services to a variety of clientele. She is also certified in California as an Access Specialist, Inspector of Record, and Combination Inspector and brings over thirty years of design, management and construction experience across a vast array of project types. Her insights on construction methods, codes and regulation, and architectural design combine to form an integrated approach to assessing existing conditions in a variety of built environments, including hospitals, schools, commercial, multi-family, and historic properties.

 

Working as the client’s agent or in collaboration with multidisciplinary design teams, Ms. Anderson is committed to reduce project expenditures and risk by providing clear and accurate reports and opinions for use in plan reviews, property transactions, project management, and legal dealings.

She is active on several state and organizational committees and lectures frequently on a wide range of topics, including accessibility, quality assurance in design and construction, and the development of building codes and regulations.
