Jeff Dalton speaking on AGILE CMMIJeff

In an industry that is becoming progressively more competitive, the process used to develop systems and software is the last remaining area for competitive advantage.  Similar technologies and skill sets are available in all corners of the world, but innovative and useful processes have eluded all but a handful of organizations.

With their high-failure rates, over complicated and ill-conceived processes have soured the industry on process models such as CMMI, ITIL, ISO, and SPICE.  But the success or failure doesn’t lie in the model, but in the interpretation and deployment of process based on the model, and this can make the difference between a vibrant and innovative company and one that is struggling for survival.

The application of Agile methods and object orientation  to the design and deployment of software engineering practices is uncommon but is an effective and innovative solution to solving the high-failure rates experienced by too many companies.  Much as the application of Agile principles has helped solve many of the problems leading to failures in our industry, similar concepts can be successfully applied to bring agility and flexibility to the engineering discipline.  Jeff Dalton has authored a methodology with Encapsulated Process Objects at the heart of the engineering process using concepts and language familiar to engineers, and providing them with the ultimate flexibility and value as they deploy useful and usable processes.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

A SCAMPI v1.2 Lead Appraiser and CMMI v1.2 Instructor, Jeff Dalton is President and CEO of Broadsword, and is an author and consultant with over twenty years of technology and software process improvement experience.  His book, AgileCMMI, will be released on Auerbach Publications later this year.

His software engineering and process improvement career spans over two decades where he focused on the delivery of software using iterative and incremental methods at several companies including Electronic Data Systems, Ernst & Young, and RL Polk where he served as Director of IT Re-Engineering & Quality.  His experience includes the extensive use of the CMMI, Six Sigma, and ISO9001, as well as Agile methods, as frameworks for software process improvement.

Jeff is a popular speaker who appears throughout North America at the SEI’s SEPG conference, ASQ;’s World Congress, ASQ’s Software Division, and many others.  His Blog, “Ask the CMMI Appraiser” receives thousands of hits a week where people from all over the world are looking for answers to CMMI questions.

He is co-author of the SEI Publication “CMMI of Agile, why not embrace both?” and was awarded the SEIs Outstanding Representative award at last year’s SEPG conference.
