*** Don't miss the next Film Financing Townhall on 6/30 in Beverly Hills & our Film Financing Workshop on 7/11 in San Francisco ***
The Bay Area chapter of the Institute for International Film Financing (IIFF) continues its successful series of monthly gatherings at the junction of film & finance with another special Townhall Meeting in San Francisco. Our friends at Academy of Art University are again hosting us at their new facilities in the City's SoMa district, conveniently located just a short stroll from SF Caltrain Station at 4th & King.
This "grassroots" community get-together is designed to foster & inform productive relationships between attending professionals and to provide unbiased insight & education about the business of film (and film financing in particular). The event features a powerful roster of highly topical speakers from the filmmaking and financial industries. We are delighted to once again welcome real-world financiers among our guests for the evening!
IIFF's one-of-a-kind mission is to sustainably expand the scope & appeal of film financing, and to do so for the benefit of the public at large. True to our proven motto of "democratizing film financing," IIFF's regular Townhall Meetings bring together a wide array of professionals from relevant backgrounds in film, finance and beyond for a vibrant evening of insightful presentations and speeches, inspiring discussion and focused networking. Who should attend? Entrepreneurs, technologists, attorneys, bankers, investment managers, venture capitalists and other non-film professionals are cordially invited to learn more about independent film. Are you considering taking an active role in film or would you like to expand your current involvement? Don't miss this opportunity to connect with the like-minded… Established and aspiring filmmakers are, naturally, more than welcome to join us as well!
The evening's five presentations plus panel discussion will address key issues relevant to filmmakers, financiers, and anyone interested in the economics, business mechanics, and financial dynamics of film. They will be followed by Q&A time. Attendees will also have ample opportunity to interact & network with our distinguished presenters and panelists and amongst themselves.
An informal après-meeting celebration will take place at an area restaurant!

— by Thomas Trenker (bio), Wall Street investment banker & Silicon Valley high-tech executive turned social entrepreneur & film financier; Founder/Chairman at Institute for Int'l Film Financing (IIFF); Managing Director at FilmAngels … (more) »
In his quantitative presentation, Thomas summarizes the conclusions of his statistical analysis of factors that, alone or combined, predispose movies for profitability. Digging deep into his data, Thomas makes the case that, on average, independent films are superior not just on their widely touted creative & artistic merits, including originality, but – perhaps surprisingly – also in terms of their commercial value as measured by expected return on investment (ROI). With the economics of filmmaking evolving past Hollywood's traditional "rules of thumb", a new savvy generation of film entrepreneurs and financiers is well positioned to succeed through innovation.

Most recently, Adam has started applying his expertise and connections to film financing projects as well. ADN Capital Ventures provides financial services, project structuring, commercial negotiations and project development services to both private firms (developers, contractors, financial sponsors) and the public sector, including authorities and government organizations, in pursuit of development efforts of new and/or upgraded infrastructure. Previously, Adam served as Executive Director of Municipal Securities and Corporate Finance at UBS Investment Bank. He spent over seventeen years with UBS in London, Zurich, New York and San Francisco funding transportation infrastructure such as roads, airports, ports and mass transit systems. Among his clients were Departments of Transportation (DOTs), government authorities, public bodies and private-sector companies. In the US, he advised and worked on over ten PPP/PFI (Public-Private Partnership/Private Finance Initiative) and concession deals, including the Indiana Toll Road and Northwest Parkway and two greenfield container port terminals in the Gulf of Mexico. Adam's services encompassed advising public authorities and government enterprises, including NJ DOT, on the application of suitable public-private partnership models for their infrastructure sector. In addition to UBS, Adam has worked at Natwest Markets/Royal Bank of Scotland Group in London, Swiss Bank Corporation (SBC) in London and the Copelouzos Group in Athens, Greece. – Sandra Hay (topic) began her career as a dancer and choreographer performing with both the Alvin Ailey and Eric Hawkins Dance Companies in New York, and studied with famed choreographer Martha Graham. Always searching for ways to take dance to the next creative level, she created a performance company integrating multimedia and film techniques into live dance/music performance, creating high-impact, dramatic theatrical experiences. Transitioning from dance to film and video, Sandra formed Visualize Productions, and began developing writing, producing, directing, shooting and editing projects, including a slate of music and environmental programs, commercials, television series and documentaries. Fueled by a deep personal concern for the environment, health and well-being, she created a fresh and dynamic approach to programming for such industry pioneers as Deepak Chopra, Andrew Weil, M.D., and Caroline Myss, Ph.D., for PBS and the home video market. Along with her production company, Sandra co-founded Pacific Ocean Post (POP) in Santa Monica, CA. POP became the leading production and post-production facility in the Los Angeles area providing complete production and post-production services to the television, commercial, music, special effects and feature film industries. It won 2 Academy Awards for special effects. In 1999, POP was sold to Liberty Media Corporation. Sandra then created Unseen Pictures, LLC, a boutique production and post-production company. Unseen's mission is to create programs that marry substantive content with high-end film and video technologies focusing in the areas of music/entertainment, the environment, spirituality and transformation. The company's clients include: CBS, A&E, PBS, the United Nations, Sounds True, the Annenberg Foundation, PG&E and renowned celebrities such as Quincy Jones, U2, Carlos Santana, REM, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Neil Diamond, Michael McDonald, Ravi Shankar, Dr. Andrew Weil, Deepak Chopra, Caroline Myss and many others. Sandra sits on several non-profit boards, including the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, the Praxis Peace Institute and the Foundation for Conscious Evolution. »
– Eric M. Wolfson (topic) is an award-winning filmmaker who has been pursuing his love of theatre and film since the age of nine. After working for several years as a professional actor in San Francisco, Eric moved to Los Angeles to found Jaffle Productions. Working under the auspices of Jaffle, Eric has directed, produced and edited a series of short films on both 8mm and 16mm. For several years he has been compiling footage for a documentary on Yiddish language and culture that he is producing and directing for San Jose based PBS affiliate, KTEH. In 2006, he completed post-production on his first feature film, a dark comedy entitled "CallBack," which he wrote, directed, produced and edited. He has spent the last year touring the festival circuit with "CallBack," which has participated in nine festivals to date and won Best Picture and Best Actor awards at Chicago's Indie-Fest 2006, as well as Best Director at Nashville's inaugural FYLMZ Festival earlier this year. Currently, Eric is producing a documentary about the Prisonaires, an all convict band from the '50s, entitled "Just Walkin' in the Rain." In addition to making his own films, Eric also works as a freelance editor and production manager. Eric's strength as a producer lies in his understanding of the entire process of filmmaking from conception to distribution. »
– Leena Pendharkar (topic) started her filmmaking career in the world of documentaries, writing and directing several award winning films, including "My Narmada Travels" about indigenous people in India losing their land to a large dam. That film won several awards, including a First Prize at EarthVision film festival and a Bronze award at WorldFest Houston. Ultimately, it was picked up for broadcast by Al Gore's network Current TV. Her narrative short "This Moment" about an interracial couple at a crossroads in their relationship screened widely on the festival circuit from the Hamptons to Harlem and Ojai, and can currently be seen on Jaman.com. It was also distributed through Ambassador Media to several colleges including Oberlin and UNC-Chapel Hill for use in courses related to race studies. Leena recently completed principal photography on her feature film debut "Raspberry Magic," starring Meera Simhan ("Date Movie"), Ravi Kapoor ("Crossing Jordan"), Bella Thorne ("My Own Worst Enemy"), Zach Mills ("Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium") and newcomers Lily Javaherpour and Keya Shah. The screenplay for "Raspberry Magic" was nominated for the ABC Talent Development Fund, was a finalist for the Roy W. Dean Grant as well as the Sundance Labs, and placed in the top fifteen percent of the Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting Competition. Film Independent said of the script, "It's not often that true family films with messages that can touch all ages are created. Central to this script are incredibly well defined characters that are authentic in every detail. It's an excellent vehicle to introduce new faces and, frankly, a new family into the American cinema lexicon." Her new screenplay, "RK Dandekar Finds Home," was a finalist for the recent Sundance Labs, as well. In addition to her film endeavors, Leena has an extensive background in interactive media as a writer and designer, and won several awards for her visionary work, including a Wired Magazine Award for Excellence in New Media. She started her media career as a freelance journalist, writing about everything from technology to culture for the San Francisco Chronicle, Wired.com, ZDNet.com and many other publications. She also served as a Congressional Aide to Congressman Bob Filner, developing his web/media properties, including his first electronic newsletter. Leena teaches classes related to filmmaking, writing and interactive design at Loyola Marymount University, Otis College of Art and Design, and UCLA Extension. She holds a Master's degree in Documentary Filmmaking from the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. »
