Event Details

Museum objects are at high risk of accidental damage when they are being handled or moved.  Damage caused by handling can also be cumulative and not immediately apparent to the user. It is therefore important to know how to handle all objects in the correct and most appropriate way.

This workshop will share National Museums Scotland Object Handling guidelines and offer advice on best practice. It will cover the majority of object types and will offer guidance on when to consult a specialist. It should assist participants in minimising damage to their collections through handling and will suggest how professionals can implement good procedures through advance preparation, object labelling, use of safety equipment and producing a local policy for Object Handling.

The day will concentrate on offering practical advice, sharing good practice through case studies and demonstrations, and providing information on sources and networks for further advice.  There will be time throughout the day to meet colleagues and share information.

National Museums Scotland

Partnerships both home and abroad ensure our collections reach as many people as possible.

National Museums Scotland's current partnership activity is extensive. Through touring exhibitions, loans, support and dedicated activity programmes, we are able to introduce our collections to a much wider audience than can walk through the doors of our museums. Our partnerships also help boost skills, enabling us to share knowledge and experience across the museums community.
