Counting My Blessings from Zero to One
When it came to learning technology, I felt like a Von Trapp Child being taught the basics of the musical scale by Sister Maria. Dough, the cash, the bottom line, ray a light blast just for fun..
Still, being of questionable mind and inquisitive nature I threw myself into this computer thing. I even invested in my very own first computer, a CP/M system. Imagine me buying a computer. But it was so pretty, and it clicked when it started, beeped when you goofed and whirred when it stood still.
At a time when everyone else was rushing to see Invasion of the Body Snatchers at movie theatres, I sucked on the brains of everyone I interviewed. I learned some fascinating new things.
How many of you in this room know what a development system is?
How many of you believe it is something you use to increase your bra size?
Was I the only one?
Apparently my development system was working overtime, because before long Bill Gates took me to lunch.
About the Presenter
Barbara Sehr has undergone more than a few extreme makeovers in her lifetime. By day, Barbara still performs as a technical writer in an industry where humor is often unappreciated. As a native German, she of course has no difficulty dealing with the humorously impaired. Her life's therapy is the comedy stage -be it online, in print, or holding up a "Will tell jokes for food" sign at a freeway exit.
Barbara made her international television debut on "Out for Laughs" a standup show taped before a live audience in Vancouver, BC, in October 2009.
She had previously appeared on Comedy Countdown, a weekly show with Kent Emmons on XM Satellite's National Lampoon Radio. She appears regularly on comedy and conference stages in the Puget Sound area and across the country - including Chicago, Atlanta, Minneapolis, and Southern California.
Barbara is all sugar and spice - everything PG-13-rated nice - with an occasional puppy dog tail thrown in for old-time's sake. Her day job with Quinstreet Media allows her to expound on algorithms to a new generation of would-be nerds, while she dances to the rhythms of inebriated laughter at night. She is a six-foot tall teller of sometimes technically challenging tall tales and short one-liners. Even as she has diminished stage presence by more than 160 pounds in recent years - her heart is heavy with a passion for ending narrow-mindedness.
Barbara works hard to make the world a funnier place. After all, she is not only funny - she is the only known journalist to interview Bill Gates as both a male and female reporter.
