Class: Bendowa: A Zen Manifesto

Thursdays, May 10 - June 7
(5 Class Meetings)
7:30 - 9 pm
with Zachary Smith

"Bendowa" is a wonderful document. Deeply personal in what it reveals of Dogen's biography and his inimitable style, it also directly demonstrates a way that transcends the personal and cuts across historical, cultural and national boundaries. It shows Dogen engaged in planting an exotic import from China in Japanese soil and hints at some of the difficulties he encountered. We will be studying "Bendowa" both as a manual for day-to-day living in the Way and a guide to how to do it in a world undreamed of by Dogen and his contemporaries.

Related Bio(s):

Zachary Smith - Anshi Daigi
Zachary Smith, Anshi Daigi, has been practicing since 1993, took jukai in 1995, and was shuso under Abbot Paul Haller in Fall of 2007. He currently directs North Mountain Zendo, a zazenkai group in North Beach. In addition to his involvement with Zen, Zachary is a husband and father (of 4), an engineer, a musician, a bike fanatic, and an avid but mediocre poet. He may be the only person in the history of Zen in the West to have interrupted a residential practice period to tour with a rock band.

San Francisco Zen Center (SFZC)

Established in 1962 by Shunryu Suzuki Roshi and his American students, San Francisco Zen Center is a Soto Zen Buddhist community with three practice places in the SF Bay Area: City Center, an urban temple in the heart of San Francisco; Green Gulch Farm, in Marin County, where fertile fields meet the ocean; and Tassajara Zen Mountain Center, the first Zen training monastery in the West, in the Ventana Wilderness inland from Big Sur. At San Francisco Zen Center, zazen, study, and work practice are available to a diverse population of students, visitors, lay people, priests, and monks. All are welcome!
